Alternative kiln construction........

The kiln under full fire (around 1700F).

approaching the magic point of 1850-degrees F

.........finished.  31-gallon trash can with 1-inch 8# ceramic fiber.  Double-thickness on the floor and lid of the kiln.  The heat source is a Harbor Freight weed burner hooked up to a 20# tank at the moment.

The initial raku fire went well - about 45 minutes to reach 1850F (taking it slowly).  Nothing melted nor caught on fire.  Now the fun begins.
